Northeast’s First Expressway To Reduce Travel Time Between Guwahati And Panchgram To Five Hours: CM Sarma

This project, which includes multiple tunnels, is expected to require an investment of Rs. 25,000 crore and aims to connect Guwahati with various parts of Assam within five hours.

GUWAHATI: The Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit commenced in Guwahati on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment for the state’s development. On the first day, Assam signed 164 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) valued at approximately Rs. 1.89 lakh crore. The summit’s focus on enhancing connectivity, both by road and water, continued on Wednesday, February 26.

During a session on Road Transport, Railways, and Shipping, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the announcement of a substantial infrastructure package worth Rs. 55,179 crore by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of reducing travel time between regions, stating that the new four-lane road from Guwahati to Barapani (Umiam, Meghalaya) will significantly improve access to Panchgram, where a papermill is located.

Additionally, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced new railway projects, including two intercity trains linking Guwahati with Silchar and Agartala. He mentioned the construction of 1,824 km of new railway lines in Assam and the Northeast since 2014 and setting up of Gati Shakti cargo terminals to add strength to the region’s railways infrastructure.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also discussed the possibility of Barak and Brahmaputra rivers enabling cargo and passenger transport, further boosting Assam’s connectivity and economic growth.
