Assam: Youths fighting addiction attend ‘Grand Sober’ event in Margherita

The ‘Grand Sober’ event at Margherita De-Addiction Centre celebrated the recovery of youths overcoming addiction, marked by a heartwarming cake-cutting ceremony.

Margherita: A grand event, “Grand Sober,” was organized on Saturday night at the Margherita De-Addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre, where youths who have overcome addiction celebrated their new beginnings with a cake-cutting ceremony.

The event had a festive atmosphere with songs, music, and dance performances by individuals currently undergoing treatment at the centre.

Located at 3 Number Makum Pathar Machey Gaon, Margherita, the rehabilitation centre was established on January 10, 2021, by two youths, Pritam Singh alias Diku and Deboraj Baruah, with the aim of providing a new life to those affected by drug addiction.

Since its inception, the centre has successfully treated over 80 individuals, helping them overcome addiction and reintegrate into society. According to Pritam Singh, president of the centre, and Deboraj Baruah, the general secretary, the facility provides treatment to youths not only from Margherita but also from nearby areas such as Digboi, Sadiya, Doomdooma, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, and even the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The “Grand Sober” event highlighted the significance of community support in addiction recovery and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The centre offers a range of services, including counselling, detoxification, and rehabilitation programs, while also extending support to families and communities affected by addiction.

Additionally, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) initiative, which aims to create awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and provide support to those affected.
