Assam’s opposition calls for a denunciation of the BJP MP’s comment referring to Dhubri as a ‘Mini Bangladesh’

GUWAHATI: During a contentious session on Friday, opposition legislators in Assam initiated a motion for condemnation against BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi. This action was prompted by his contentious comments made during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, where he referred to Dhubri district in Assam as “mini Bangladesh.”

The call for condemnation was led by Congress MLA and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, who deemed Trivedi’s statement as disrespectful to the state of Assam and urged the assembly to formally denounce it. AIUDF lawmaker Rafiqul Islam supported this stance by questioning the government’s position regarding the statehood of Dhubri. While Speaker Biswajit Daimary indicated a willingness to share his views on the matter, the assembly session proceeded without addressing the issue, leaving the request for a condemnation motion unresolved.

In a related development, the Assam Pradesh BJP has vehemently criticized Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy for his comments in Parliament, which referred to Assam as the “Land of Lahe Lahe.” The party accused the Congress and its allies of persistently showing disrespect towards Assam and its residents, demanding an apology for the remarks.
