KOKRAJHAR: Surya Baruah, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for Kokrajhar district in Assam, has been apprehended on allegations of possessing assets that exceed his declared income sources. The arrest was executed by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Monday, following an extensive investigation into his financial dealings.
Last month, the vigilance team conducted searches at Baruah’s residence in Ananda Nagar, Bhangagarh, Guwahati, where it was discovered that he owns several properties in the city, raising concerns regarding the origins of his wealth. After his arrest in Kokrajhar, Baruah was transported to Guwahati for further legal proceedings, where he underwent a medical examination before being taken to Panbazar Police Station for processing.
In addition to the searches at his home, the vigilance team also focused on his office in Dhubri, uncovering a significant amount of Rs 37 lakh in cash and a .32 caliber pistol, which has intensified scrutiny over Baruah’s financial situation. This case underscores the Assam government’s ongoing commitment to combat corruption and promote accountability among public officials, with the investigation into Baruah’s assets being part of a broader effort to address financial misconduct within the state’s administrative framework.
