MANGALDAI: The Darrang Police have arrested Mahibul Islam, the president of the Anti-Corruption and Social Welfare Foundation of Bodoland, a non-governmental organization, for allegedly soliciting large sums of money by claiming he could influence senior police officials.
This was purportedly aimed at securing the release of a government medical officer accused of sexually assaulting a minor patient. Following a tip-off, police collected evidence of Islam’s deceptive practices and took him into custody on Monday evening for interrogation. Further inquiries uncovered that he had also extorted significant amounts from two teachers, promising to arrange their transfers to preferred locations, and had taken a large sum from a contractor, assuring him of expedited payments for pending bills at the BTC Secretariat.
Mahibul Islam, a resident of Jhargaon in the Ranipukhuri area of Udalguri district, has been charged under Mangaldai PS Case No. 63/2025, specifically under Sections 316(2)/318(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. After appearing in court in Mangaldai this evening, he was remanded to judicial custody at the Mangaldai District Jail. It is noteworthy that Islam is reportedly linked to the Minority Front of the UPPL.
