Guwahati: A wild elephant causes significant disruption at the Narengi Army Camp

GUWAHATI: A herd of wild elephants has instigated a precarious situation at the Narengi Army Camp in the Satgaon region of Guwahati, as they invaded the classroom of the Army Public School situated within the military enclave.

One particular elephant, frequently seen wandering within the camp, is believed to have strayed from the nearby Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary in search of food, highlighting a long-standing issue that has plagued the area. Reports indicate that the presence of this tusker has incited fear among the local population, resulting in a disordered atmosphere.

Although officials have yet to provide specific strategies to tackle this ongoing dilemma, such incidents underscore the urgent necessity for a collaborative approach to mitigate the escalating conflicts between humans and elephants. In a related incident last month, a rogue elephant wreaked havoc in Marangi, Golaghat district, instilling widespread panic among residents. This elephant, which had been roaming the vicinity for several days, caused extensive damage to homes and crops, leaving the community in a state of trepidation.

It was reported that the elephant invaded the residential area of Patkatiya Village, adjacent to National Highway 39, creating chaos throughout the night and specifically targeting the residence of Champak Dutta, where it destroyed his rice storage, resulting in considerable financial loss. Fortunately, officials from the Forest Department’s Bakial Beat Office were eventually able to drive the elephant away, providing much-needed relief to the frightened residents.
