What is a Shakti Peetha?
Shakti Peethas are sacred shrines dedicated to Goddess Shakti (the Divine Feminine). According to legend, when Goddess Sati immolated herself in grief, Lord Shiva roamed the universe carrying her body. Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati’s corpse, and her body parts fell at various places across the Indian subcontinent. These spots became known as Shakti Peethas, each representing a part of the Goddess’s body.
There are believed to be 51 major Shakti Peethas, and Bali Pith is one of them.
Location and Significance of Bali Pith
Bali Pith is located in the state of Assam, though the exact geographic identity of this Pith is often linked with the Kamakhya region in Guwahati, which itself is one of the most prominent Shakti Peethas.
The word “Bali” means sacrifice, and “Pith” means seat or location. Bali Pith is believed to be the place where ritualistic sacrifices and Tantric practices were carried out in ancient times to appease the Goddess.
