DIBRUGARH: The illegal betting scene related to the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been flourishing in Dibrugarh, as evidenced by the recent apprehension of two individuals linked to IPL betting, highlighting the significant impact of this illicit industry on local youth.
The individuals arrested have been named as Anil Kabri and Deepak Sahu, both residents of Dibrugarh; however, they are not the sole participants in this operation. According to sources, a primary orchestrator has been managing the entire scheme with remarkable coordination. “Numerous young people, particularly college students, are drawn into this profitable betting enterprise. Many lack a proper understanding of the game, yet they engage in this activity to cover their daily expenses.
The mastermind behind this operation is effectively running the illegal business, aided by the influence of certain local businessmen,” a source revealed. It has been observed that the entire operation relies on prohibited mobile applications, which are utilized for conducting illegal bets. “Many young individuals have fallen victim to this unlawful IPL betting, incurring substantial financial losses. Meanwhile, the kingpin orchestrating the syndicate has amassed considerable wealth through these betting activities. This constitutes organized crime, and they are laundering black money through hawala channels. The Dibrugarh Police must thoroughly investigate this issue and take decisive action against the individual leading the syndicate,” the source added.
Recently, the Dibrugarh Police arrested two suspects and have initiated a case under the Assam Game and Betting Act of 1970, which forbids illegal gambling practices. If found guilty, the accused may face imprisonment and significant fines. “Engaging in betting not only breaches the law but also fosters financial deceit and addiction. We encourage the community to avoid such activities and report any suspicious actions,” stated a police official.
