The decision by the Union Cabinet to incorporate caste enumeration in the upcoming census has been positively received by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He expressed his support for Census 2025, emphasizing that it will enhance the pursuit of social justice and honor the legacies of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur, and other notable figures. CM Sarma remarked on X that the Modi administration has consistently advocated for the representation and rights of marginalized communities. On Wednesday, the Union government confirmed that caste enumeration would be conducted transparently in the next census. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) linked this decision to the government’s commitment to social justice, while the opposition claimed that their persistent pressure compelled the administration to address this sensitive issue, which is pivotal in the context of the 2024 general election campaign. This government decision precedes the assembly elections in Bihar, where various parties, including some allies of the BJP, have expressed support for the caste census. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the cabinet committee on political affairs has resolved to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census.
