In Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP President Dilip Saikia expressed their profound gratitude to the Assamese populace for their overwhelming support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies during the recent Panchayat elections. During a press conference at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Tuesday, the leaders regarded the election results as a strong endorsement of the party’s development initiatives and a reaffirmation of its dedication to further strengthening the Panchayati Raj system across the state.
The Chief Minister emphasized that, due to the extraordinary backing from the public, the BJP secured 272 out of 397 Zila Parishad seats independently. The coalition’s partner parties, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Rabha Joutha Mancha, obtained 28 and 4 seats, respectively, elevating the BJP-led alliance’s vote share to an impressive 76.22%. This marks a notable increase from the 66% of votes received in the 2019 elections. Conversely, the Congress party saw a significant decline in its performance, winning only 72 seats—18% of the total—down from the 35% it had previously achieved.
Furthermore, CM Sarma pointed out the results in the Anchalik Panchayat member constituencies, where the BJP and its allies claimed 1,436 out of 2,192 seats, representing 66% of the total. The Congress lagged significantly, capturing only 22% of the seats. The Chief Minister remarked that this substantial reduction in the Congress’s support base indicates a growing disconnection between the opposition and the aspirations of the rural populace.
