With a six-wicket triumph in the fourth match, India overcame England to secure their inaugural Women’s T20I series. The final game of the five-match series, which India currently leads 3-1, is scheduled for July 12 in Birmingham.
In a solitary Twenty20 International match conducted in Derby in 2006, India had bested England. Since then, the ‘Women in Blue’ have suffered defeats in all their home and away women’s Twenty20 International series against England. With five wickets taken by Radha Yadav (2/15), 20-year-old Shree Charani (2/30), and Deepti Sharma (1/29), spin bowling played a pivotal role in India’s emphatic victory on Wednesday, restricting the hosts to a commendable 126 for 7. Following this, openers Shafali Verma (32) and Smriti Mandhana (31) performed exceptionally, establishing a 56-run partnership that laid the groundwork for success. With eighteen balls to spare, the visitors surpassed the target, culminating in a memorable evening.
This victory provides India with a significant boost as they gear up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which is set to occur here next year. “We are truly thankful that we managed to achieve this (series win). I am immensely proud of my team for the way we played throughout this series. It was crucial to gain that momentum, and I am very pleased with how we all contributed,” stated India captain Harmanpreet Kaur during the post-match presentation.
After inflicting a record-breaking 97-run defeat on England in the series opener, Kaur and her team have been in exceptional form. They subsequently secured a 24-run victory in Bristol, marking England women’s first-ever T20I loss at that venue. The third T20I resulted in a narrow five-run defeat for them.
India achieves its inaugural Women’s triumph against England in the T20I series.
