Assam Assembly Approves a Budget of Rs 2.63 Lakh Crore for the 2025-26 Fiscal Year

GUWAHATI: On Monday, the Assam Assembly ratified a budget of Rs 2.63 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, following the introduction of the Assam Appropriation Bill, 2025. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog presented the budget on March 10, which outlines various initiatives aimed at enhancing welfare programs for students, youth, and women, while also prioritizing the enhancement of the state’s infrastructure.

This budget holds particular importance as it represents the final comprehensive financial plan to be introduced by the current administration, headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, before the assembly elections anticipated in late March or early April 2026. The proposals within the budget are directed towards addressing various socio-economic challenges and advancing the welfare of citizens throughout Assam.

Notable aspects of the budget include increased funding for educational initiatives, youth skill development programs, and dedicated support for women’s empowerment. Additionally, significant investments have been allocated for infrastructure projects, which are expected to bolster economic growth and improve connectivity within the state.

The Assembly also approved several bills, including the Assam Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Bill, the Srimanta Sankardev University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill, the Bongaigaon University (Amendment) Bill, the Jagannath Barooah University (Amendment) Bill, the Nagaon University (Amendment) Bill, the North Lakhimpur University (Amendment) Bill, the Sibsagar University (Amendment) Bill, the Swahid Kanaklata Baruah State University (Amendment) Bill, the Kokrajhar University (Amendment) Bill, the Maa Kamakhya University Bill, and the Swami Vivekananda University Bill.
