DIPHU: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed his full support for the proposal to establish a Greenfield Airport on the contentious PGR/VGR land in Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong, as presented by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
During a press conference today at the Kajir Ronghangpi Guest House in Taralangso, Diphu, CM Sarma reaffirmed his backing for the Council’s initiative, emphasizing the significant advantages that such an infrastructure project could offer to the region.
Nevertheless, some organizations have voiced concerns regarding this substantial proposal, calling for the eviction of occupants from the disputed land. In response to these concerns, the Assam Chief Minister highlighted that the issue is currently under judicial consideration. He stated that the government must respect the High Court’s ruling and that all actions should adhere to the legal framework.
It is important to note that the PGR (Professional Grazing Reserve) and VGR (Village Grazing Reserve) lands are embroiled in a lengthy dispute, with various claims and counterclaims regarding ownership and usage rights. The announcement of the airport project has further fueled this debate. Despite the ongoing controversy, the KAAC remains steadfast in its decision, citing development, improved connectivity, and economic growth as the primary motivations for the proposed Greenfield Airport.
