GUWAHATI: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed his appreciation for both the state’s police force and its citizens for their commendable efforts in maintaining peace and harmony, particularly in light of the minimal protests that arose in response to the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act.

In a social media post, CM Sarma acknowledged the potential for unrest but conveyed his satisfaction with the overall tranquil demeanor exhibited by the populace. He noted that, despite Assam’s significant Muslim demographic, the state experienced only isolated protests in three locations, each involving no more than 150 individuals, which he viewed as a testament to the collective maturity of the Assamese people.

Furthermore, CM Sarma extended special recognition to the Assam Police for their diligent preparations that effectively thwarted any large-scale disturbances. He emphasized that the proactive measures and successful collaboration among law enforcement agencies were instrumental in preserving calm across the state. Highlighting the importance of societal harmony, the Chief Minister remarked that the people of Assam, irrespective of their caste, creed, community, or religion, have united as one.

He also mentioned the anticipation surrounding the upcoming Bohag Bihu festival, expressing that the citizens are joyfully preparing to celebrate this occasion together. The brief protests that did occur were reported to be peaceful and well-organized, with no incidents of violence or heightened tensions, as authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure a festive and incident-free Bihu celebration.
