GUWAHATI: The Maha Ambubachi Mahayog is set to occur at the Kamakhya Temple located on the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, commencing at 2:56 PM on June 22 and concluding at 3:00 AM on June 26. On June 2, Tourism Minister Ranjit Dass presided over a review meeting. Final determinations will be made during a visit to the temple on June 9.
This year, the event is evolving beyond the conventional ‘Mela’ format, with the intention of providing a more structured spiritual experience. Importantly, a budget of ₹4.55 crore has been allocated for the Ambubachi Mahayog. Nevertheless, 24 departments have been assigned the responsibility of ensuring the event proceeds smoothly. For reasons of security and sanctity, open-sole footwear such as sandals is prohibited in the vicinity of the temple. Authorities are also prepared for adverse weather conditions. The Pandu road may be closed if necessary, while two alternative routes will remain accessible. Should COVID-19 protocols be reinstated, they will be enforced rigorously. It is noteworthy that no VIP or VVIP arrangements will be established, as this year’s focus is on providing equal access to all devotees attending the mela. The Ambubachi Mela attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, sadhus, tantrics, and spiritual seekers from across India and beyond. With its profound ties to Shakti worship and tantric traditions, the mela transforms Guwahati into a lively intersection of faith, mysticism, and devotion each year.
