Assam: Nearly 6.5 Lakh MGNREGS Job Cards Deleted in State

In the period from 2021-22 to 2024-25, a total of 6,42,745 job cards of active workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Assam were deleted.

Guwahati: In the period from 2021-22 to 2024-25, a total of 6,42,745 job cards of active workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Assam were deleted. Not only in Assam but also in other states in the NE, job cards of MGNREGS workers were also deleted.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the job cards were primarily deleted due to fake, duplicate, or incorrect entries, permanent relocation of families from the Gram Panchayat, and reclassification of Gram Panchayats as urban areas. It clarified that updating and deleting job cards is a regular exercise undertaken by state governments.

The Ministry’s statistical report says that as many as 6,42,745 job cards were deleted in Assam from 2021-22 to 2024-25 (up to February 4, 2025). The year-wise breakdown of the data suggests that in 2021-22, a total of 25,741 job cards were deleted; in 2022-23, the number was 82,953; in 2023-24, another 1,54,262 cards; and in 2024-25, the number of cards deleted was 3,79,789. It is apparent from the above figures that the highest number of job cards were deleted in the current financial year.After Assam, the second-highest number of cards deleted in the NE is in Meghalaya, with 31,973 cards deleted in the period from 2021-22 to 2024-25. The other states, with descending number of cards deleted, are Tripura with 23,734, Arunachal Pradesh with 22,078, Mizoram with 20,677, Nagaland with 14,963, Manipur with 8,843, and Sikkim with 2,015 cards deleted.

As opposed to the job cards deleted for different reasons, new job cards were also issued in Assam and other NE states. In Assam, the new cards issued from January 1, 2024, to February 6, 2025, are 2,42,645. Among the NE states, Arunachal issued 33,064 new cards, Manipur 18,997 cards, Meghalaya 27,739 cards, Mizoram 11,009 cards, Nagaland 19,559 cards, Sikkim 1,694 cards, and Tripura issued 14,334 new job cards under MGNREGS between January 1, 2024, and February 6, 2025.
