TEZPUR: As Rongali Bihu approached, the atmosphere at Assam Valley Academy Senior Secondary School in Ketekibari, Tezpur, was filled with excitement and cultural vibrancy, as teachers, students, and parents came together to partake in a Pre-Rongali Bihu celebration.
The school grounds were alive with energy, with attendees donning traditional Assamese garments, which beautifully set the stage for the festivities ahead. This event was designed not only to celebrate but also to educate the younger generation about the rich heritage of Bohag Bihu. Principal and Director Abhijit Kalita remarked that the occasion served a dual purpose, functioning as both a festive gathering and an enlightening experience that underscored the profound customs and cultural importance of Rongali Bihu. The celebration was further enhanced by the delightful scents of traditional Assamese dishes, including doi, chira, laru, pitha, and an array of sweets, which contributed to the warm and festive atmosphere. Students and teachers engaged enthusiastically in various cultural performances, showcasing their pride in Assam’s rich heritage.
The event was officially inaugurated by Bijay Saikia, President of Assam Valley Academy, who was joined by notable figures such as Prince Bhuyan, a retired professor from LOKD College, and Dip Kumar Kalita, a senior journalist and cultural activist, among other esteemed guests. In his speech, President Bijay Saikia highlighted the cultural and emotional importance of Bihu within Assamese society, encouraging all present to cherish and promote this invaluable heritage. The celebration featured lively performances of Bihu songs and dances by both students and teachers, creating a joyful atmosphere to usher in the Assamese New Year.
To further enrich the educational experience, the school unveiled a Bihu-themed display board, meticulously crafted to educate students about the various rituals and traditions associated with Bohag Bihu. In a gesture of community appreciation, 100 artists, writers, parents, and media personnel were honored with bihuwans during the festivities. The event culminated in a traditional Bihu jalpan, where guests and participants shared in the spirit of togetherness and celebration.
