Assam: The completion of Khanikar Stadium in Dibrugarh is expected by the end of the year

DIBRUGARH: The Khanikar Stadium, currently under construction in Dibrugarh, is set to be completed by the end of this year, significantly enhancing the sporting infrastructure in Upper Assam by increasing its seating capacity from 5,000 to 25,000.

During a recent inspection, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the project’s progress and instructed officials to ensure its timely completion, incorporating all modern amenities. The stadium is anticipated to serve as a key sporting hub for the region, with the capability to host large-scale events and support the development of local talent. Upon completion, the facility will include a main gallery, an indoor stadium, accommodation for athletes, a VIP block, a swimming pool, and various other top-tier amenities.

This initiative aligns with the state government’s vision to improve sports infrastructure and encourage youth participation in sports throughout Assam. Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government’s dedication to establishing strong sporting facilities in every area and underscored the significance of Khanikar Stadium in transforming Dibrugarh into a center for sports excellence in Upper Assam.

Local residents and sports enthusiasts have welcomed this initiative, expressing optimism that the stadium will attract national-level events and provide greater opportunities for aspiring athletes in the region. Previously, in December of last year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the construction site at Khanikar, Dibrugarh, and voiced his concerns regarding the slow progress of the project, which commenced in 2019.
