Assam: Three Teenage Girls Who Went Missing Rescued After Taking the Incorrect Train

On March 12, three teenage girls, aged 14 to 15, who were from Duliajan in the Dibrugarh district of Assam, intended to travel to Tinsukia but inadvertently boarded a train that led them to Naharlagun railway station, approximately 500 kilometers away from their home. After a two-day ordeal, they were successfully reunited with their families through a swift rescue operation. Upon finding the confused teenagers, the Papu Hills police promptly organized medical examinations and provided temporary shelter at the Oju Shelter Home in Naharlagun while efforts were made to contact their families.

“A police officer involved in the rescue stated, ‘The girls were scared but physically unharmed when we located them. Our main focus was to ensure their safety and well-being.’” Through collaboration with the Duliajan police, officials were able to trace the parents of the girls, who had been anxiously searching for their missing daughters. The emotional reunion occurred at the Papu Hills police station on March 14. Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo praised the officers involved, remarking, “This prompt action reflects our dedication to ensuring the safety and welfare of children in the region.” Authorities recommend that parents engage in discussions with their children regarding travel safety, which should include guidance on what to do if they become separated from their companions and the importance of having emergency contact information. This incident highlights the vital role of inter-district police collaboration in addressing cases of missing individuals, particularly when minors are concerned.

Parents are encouraged by authorities to engage in discussions with their children regarding travel safety. This encompasses understanding the appropriate actions to take if they become separated from their travel companions and ensuring they have access to emergency contact information. The situation highlights the importance of collaboration among police departments across multiple districts in cases of missing persons, particularly when minors are concerned.
