TEZPUR: The Department of Assamese at Tezpur University (TU), in partnership with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), hosted a two-day national seminar on Thursday that centered on the essential ‘Role of Technical Terminology in Literary Translation.’ The seminar featured representatives from CSTT, including Prof Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Chairperson of CSTT, along with Dr. Shahzad Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Director of CSTT.
In his inaugural address, Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, remarked that the incorporation of technical terminology in literary translation, especially in regional languages, plays a vital role in making knowledge more accessible. During his lecture, Prof Dhananjay Singh highlighted the complex nature of translation and stressed the importance of a word’s popularity while emphasizing the necessity of maintaining meaning across different languages.
Professor Chandan Kumar Sarma, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tezpur University, emphasized the crucial role of translation in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps, highlighting its importance in both academic and societal contexts. Dr. Shahzad Ahmed Ansari provided essential background information by detailing the framework and operations of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, illustrating its contributions to the field. During the event, five books published by the TU Publication Centre were also launched, with funding for their publication sourced from CSTT.
Earlier, Dr. Juri Dutta, Head of the Department of Assamese at TU and the seminar’s Programme Coordinator, briefly discussed the ongoing academic initiatives and research efforts being pursued by the Department of Assamese in this vital area. The inaugural session also featured participation from esteemed experts from other leading universities in the region, including Professor Satyakam Borthakur from the Department of Assamese at Dibrugarh University and Dr. Dhurjjati Sarma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies at Gauhati University.
