The northeastern Indian state of Assam made history and entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Thursday by performing the traditional Bihu dance at a venue. More than 11,000 performers, including drummers and dancers, took part in the state government’s bid to register a world record in the Guinness Book of Records at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. Singers and players of the traditional instruments of the state such as Dhol, Taal, Gogona, Toka, Pepa and Xutuli performed during the event. Auditions were held in the state to bring in the best performers for the huge event aimed at putting Assam’s cultural heritage on the world map. Each participant will receive a scholarship of ₹25,000 for their participation in the historic event. The certificate will be handed over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in the state today to celebrate the state’s spring festival. Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the aim was to “organize the largest Bihu dance performance at one place and enter the Guinness Book of World Records in the category of folk dance”
