Residential structures, some of which had been in place for many years, were taken down using heavy machinery, including bulldozers. Prior to this operation, numerous residents voluntarily relocated and dismantled their homes.
Authorities assert that over 2,000 households have resided on government-owned Khas land for several years. A broader initiative by the Assam government to transfer the property to the Adani Group for the development of a thermal power plant under the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL) encompasses the eviction process.
As per government reports, each displaced family will be provided with ₹50,000 as a one-time cash aid in response to their displacement. Furthermore, landless families are currently being assessed for rehabilitation in Boyjer-Alga under the oversight of the Athani Revenue Circle Officer. As frustrated residents staged protests and obstructed roadways, tensions escalated at the eviction sites. Law enforcement acted swiftly as the atmosphere grew increasingly charged. Upon the arrival of Superintendent of Police Leena Doley, she took command and helped restore order despite ongoing resistance.
In a related incident, police apprehended independent MLA Akhil Gogoi and detained him at Chapar Police Station after he attempted to access the eviction site. Sources indicate that the situation has become volatile since Akhil Gogoi’s arrival. While most families were prepared to vacate the eviction areas, a few individuals instigated chaos.
