HAFLONG: The long-awaited Jatinga-Harangajao segment of National Highway 27, an essential part of the Saurashtra-Silchar East-West Corridor, continues to be shrouded in uncertainty, lacking a definitive completion timeline. Despite numerous assurances from both the Assam Minister and the Union Government, sources suggest that even the completion of a two-lane road may not meet the anticipated January 26 deadline. The Jatinga-Harangajao section remains the main obstacle in finalizing the East-West Corridor, a project aimed at improving connectivity between Northeast India and the rest of the nation. Launched a decade ago by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), this initiative has suffered from unexplained delays.
For the residents of Dima Hasao, Tripura, Mizoram, Barak Valley, and other areas, the worsening state of the old service road has rendered travel hazardous. Thousands of both heavy and light vehicles traverse this dangerous stretch daily, inflicting considerable hardship on commuters and traders. The ongoing delays are not only hindering daily transportation but are also impeding economic growth and development throughout the Northeast.
