Gargaon College in Assam Launches Museum to Highlight the Rich Heritage of Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: In alignment with its commitment to fostering ongoing educational advancements, creative endeavors, and artistic productivity within a dynamic knowledge-driven environment, Gargaon College has made a notable advancement by inaugurating a museum. This initiative offers a distinctive platform for students, faculty, and the local community to interact with art, history, and culture.

The museum, along with a photo gallery, was established to highlight and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Sivasagar and Northeast India, and it was officially opened on Monday. During the inauguration, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta, a respected academic and Principal of Gargaon College, underscored the museum’s role in raising awareness and promoting regional culture and heritage. He expressed gratitude to the various contributors of the museum’s artifacts and emphasized the necessity of a collaborative effort from the entire college community to elevate the institution further. Dr. Mahanta also commended the museum sub-committee’s efforts and revealed plans for future developments.

The museum, which has been beautifully designed and carefully curated by faculty members Priyama Dehingia Phukan, Mina Robidas, Dr. Baluram Das, and Dr. Bornali Dutta, showcases a wide range of artifacts from the Ahom Period, including coins, costumes, palanquins, weapons, and various items of historical and cultural significance. Additionally, it features traditional tools related to fishing, agriculture, weaving, and a collection of outdated media equipment and gadgets.

The photo gallery, curated by Dr. Shyamolima Saikia, Dr. Devajani Bakalial, Dr. Mintu Gogoi, and Dr. Surajit Saikia, presents a compelling visual narrative of historical monuments, festivals, costumes, and rituals from Sivasagar and Northeast India. The museum’s items were generously donated by individuals including Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta, Dr. Pobon Kumar Gogoi, Priyama Dehingia Phukan, Mina Robidas, Dr. Nilutpal Chutia, Dr. Surajit Saikia, and Rituraj Tahu, Harekrishna Mili, Dr. Arandau Narzary, Dr. Bornali Dutta, and the Gargaon College Teachers’ Unit from the Department of History at Gargaon College, among others.
