Gauhati High Court Approves Interim Bail for USTM Chancellor Mahbabul Haque

GUWAHATI: On Monday, the Gauhati High Court granted interim bail to Mahbabul Haque, the chancellor of Meghalaya’s University of Science and Technology (USTM), who was arrested for allegedly offering students assistance in using dishonest methods during examinations to achieve high scores.

This ruling marks a significant development in a case that has garnered considerable public attention. During the bail hearing, Justice Mitali Thakuria established several conditions to ensure Haque’s cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

These conditions include his obligation to appear before the investigating officer when summoned, refraining from influencing witnesses or any individuals connected to the case, and strictly following the investigation protocols. Additionally, Haque was required to submit a bail bond of Rs 50,000 along with a surety of the same amount.

The court acknowledged Haque’s compelling arguments in support of his bail application, stating that reviewing the case diary would provide a clearer understanding of the situation. Consequently, the next hearing, along with the submission of the case diary, has been scheduled for April 9. While Haque has received a temporary reprieve, the case remains unresolved.

Following the completion of legal formalities, Haque was released from Tezpur Central Jail at approximately 6:30 pm and subsequently traveled to Guwahati under tight security measures.

His release represents a significant moment in the ongoing legal proceedings, as the case continues to develop. Haque has been in custody since March 13, facing serious allegations that have ignited discussions regarding academic integrity.
