IMD Predicts Significant Rainfall in Assam as Monsoon Conditions Strengthen Throughout the Northeast

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in various districts of Assam from July 1 to July 7. This weather phenomenon is influenced by a low-pressure system situated over coastal Gangetic West Bengal, along with a corresponding cyclonic circulation, which is anticipated to affect the region in the upcoming days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and isolated heavy rainfall are expected in numerous areas, while moderate showers are forecasted for several locations.

Despite the anticipated rainfall, maximum temperatures are projected to remain relatively stable. Rainfall has already been recorded in parts of Goalpara, Gossaigaon, Bijni, Chandubi, and Sonari, with daily totals varying from 1 to 5 cm. Over the past 24 hours, light to moderate rain has been noted, while daytime temperatures have remained above normal in most regions. The forecast for Guwahati and its surrounding areas suggests a predominantly cloudy sky with one or two instances of rain or thundershowers.

Temperatures are expected to range around 33°C (maximum) and 25°C (minimum). The weather system is predicted to gradually move northwestward across North Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand. An east-west trough, along with active monsoon conditions, is facilitating increased rainfall throughout the Northeast. In the meantime, Dibrugarh city has once again experienced severe artificial flooding due to heavy rainfall in the early hours of Friday. Several key areas of the town have been inundated, resulting in significant disruption and inconvenience for the local residents.
