Julia Roberts has confirmed that she is in discussions with the producers regarding a sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’

Hollywood actress Julia Roberts is reportedly in discussions regarding a potential sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’. The actress has recently confirmed her participation in the preliminary talks with the producers, as reported by ‘Variety’.

She stated to ‘Variety’, “They’re talking to me”. The psychological thriller directed by Luca Guadagnino also features Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Chloe Sevigny. Guadagnino expressed his willingness to direct Roberts in a sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ “in a second”. In July, it was announced that a sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ was in the early stages of development, with Celine Song, known for ‘Past Lives’ and ‘Materialists’, set to write the screenplay for the project, although she is not in negotiations to direct. According to ‘Variety’, this development news followed Dermot Mulroney, who starred in the original 1997 film alongside Roberts, hinting to the New York Post that “there is talk of a sequel”.

In ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, Julia Roberts portrayed food critic Julianne Potter, who realizes that her longtime friend Michael O’Neal (played by Mulroney), with whom she had made a promise to marry if they were still single at 28, is about to get married.

Upon realizing her love for Michael, Julianne devises a plan to disrupt the wedding. The romantic comedy also featured Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett. The original film from 1997 grossed $127 million in North America and was the ninth-highest-grossing domestic release of that year.

The film received three Golden Globe nominations. Looking ahead, Roberts will star in ‘After the Hunt’ as Alma Olsson, a college professor embroiled in a sexual abuse allegation involving one of her students and a colleague. The film is set to premiere in theaters on October 10, 2025.
