Khakee: The Bengal Chapter song – ‘Moina’ – is it an original composition or inspired by a song from an Assamese film?

Renowned director Neeraj Pandey’s web series ‘Khakee: The Bengal Chapter’, currently streaming on various OTT platforms, has come under fire for allegedly incorporating the melody of a well-known Assamese song without proper attribution to its original creators. The track “Moina,” featured in the fourth episode, closely resembles “O Moina Kon Bidhatai Sajile,” a classic from the 1969 Assamese film ‘Dr. Bezbarua’, directed by Brajen Barua.

The series notably fails to clarify whether the melody was used with permission, raising concerns about unauthorized appropriation. Film critic Utpal Datta has vocally criticized this instance of perceived plagiarism, urging the creators to acknowledge the original work. “This is a clear case of disrespect towards the artist,” Datta remarked. “It is unacceptable for a prominent writer-director like Neeraj Pandey to utilize a beloved Assamese melody without appropriate recognition. Such actions diminish the contributions of pioneering regional artists and overlook the rich heritage of Assamese cinema.” Datta highlighted the cultural importance of ‘Dr. Bezbarua’, describing it as a landmark in Assamese film history. “The music from this film has been treasured for generations.”

Lifting a melody from it without proper acknowledgment disrespects its creators, he stated. Although music director Jeet Ganguli has not yet addressed the controversy, background music director Sanjay Chowdhury informed Datta that he was unaware of the situation. Datta urges the film, television, and music unions to call for corrective measures from the producers of ‘Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.’ “This is not the first time that Assamese music has been appropriated without credit,” Datta remarked. “Even the renowned composer Naushad faced allegations of taking a tune from Assamese artist Yogesh Bharali.

Such actions must cease, and we need to unite in protest to ensure that regional artists receive the recognition they rightfully deserve.” Datta emphasizes, “The creators of Khakee: The Bengal Chapter must give credit to the original song and its composer. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our musical heritage.” As the controversy escalates, it remains unclear whether the show’s producers will respond to the calls for proper attribution. In the meantime, the revival of “O Moina Kon Bidhatai Sajile” has sparked renewed interest in ‘Dr. Bezbarua,’ reminding audiences of the enduring charm of Assamese cinema and music. –Prantik Deka
