The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the Delhi High Court on Wednesday that the portions of the film ‘Udaipur Files’ deemed offensive have been excised.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Daya was reviewing a series of petitions, including one submitted by Maulana Arshad Madani, the President of the Islamic cleric organization Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, which sought to prevent the film’s release due to its connection to the Kanhaiya Lal murder case.
The film, which is set to premiere globally this Friday, depicts the horrific murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur in Rajasthan, who was killed in June 2022 by Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, who slit his throat.
In its ruling, the Bench led by CJ Upadhyaya noted the statement from Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma, indicating that prior to the film’s certification, the CBFC had suggested specific cuts, which the film’s producer subsequently executed.
