Panchayat Elections 2025: Imposition of Prohibitory Order in Sonitpur District

TEZPUR: To ensure peace and public order during the Panchayat Election 2025, for which the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is currently applicable across the district, District Magistrate Ankur Bharali has enacted a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, effective immediately and continuing until further notice throughout the Sonitpur district.

As part of this directive, gatherings of five or more individuals in public areas without prior written consent are strictly forbidden. Additionally, any processions, rallies, or protests must receive prior approval from the District Administration. The use of slogans, placards, or speeches that could incite communal discord or disrupt public peace is explicitly prohibited. The carrying of arms, sticks, or any offensive weapons in public spaces is also banned during this period. Furthermore, the use of loudspeakers or public address systems without appropriate authorization is not allowed.

Content on social media that may incite public unrest will be monitored, and disseminating misinformation or inciting messages will result in legal consequences under relevant laws. It is important to note that this order does not apply to law enforcement and government officials performing their duties, emergency services (such as ambulances and fire brigades), or religious and cultural ceremonies, including Bihu programs, conducted on private premises with prior permission. Individuals found in violation of this order will face prosecution under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023, along with other applicable legal provisions. The notification issued on April 5 indicates that this order will remain in effect for sixty days.
