Ramcharan Bharali captivates the audience at the memorial event honoring Harmohan Sharma

MANGALDAI: The esteemed Nagara Naam artist Ramcharan Bharali, who has received numerous awards and recognitions, along with his troupe, presented the Nagara Naam on Saturday evening at ‘Harmohan Kshetra’ in Dahi, located nearby. This occasion was organized to commemorate the seventh death anniversary of Hara Mohan Sharma, the father of Prafulla Sharma, a notable Suknani Ojha from Janaram Chowka village in Dahi, who is also a beneficiary of the state government’s artist pension.

Prior to the performance, floral tributes were offered at the portrait of Harmohan Sharma, and lamps were lit by his eldest grandson, the emerging astrologer Gautam Sharma, alongside family members and local dignitaries. Danda Dhar Deka, the retired headmaster of Dahi Balika Vidyapeeth High School, reminisced, “The late Harmohan Sharma was not only a celebrated Kaviraj (traditional healer) but also an educator. He had even journeyed to the then capital, Shillong, in search of employment. Although he did not obtain the job, he later supported his family through his intellect.”

The event, hosted by youth activist Hansa Dhar Deka, was inaugurated by senior journalist Hitesh Hazarika, who remarked, “Ram Charan Bharali is not merely a performer but a cornerstone in maintaining the unique identity of Nagara Naam in the state. At the age of 80, he continues to be a vigilant protector of Nagara Naam.” Throughout the event, Bharali and his fellow artists, along with the Chairperson of Kharupetia Municipality Board, Krishna Saha, President of Dahi Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee Dhruba Jyoti Sharma, and various local elders and intellectuals, were honored.
