Tezpur University has made a notable advancement in honoring the legacy of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan by launching a modern boys’ hostel with a capacity of 500, named in tribute to the esteemed warrior. The inauguration ceremony also celebrated the establishment of the University’s School of Legal Studies, marking a significant development in the enhancement of legal education within the region. The newly built Lachit Borphukan Boys’ Hostel is a four-story structure with a total area of 9,600 square meters, designed to house students in double-occupancy accommodations.
Demonstrating the University’s dedication to inclusivity, the hostel is equipped with facilities for individuals with disabilities, including ramps and specially designed restrooms. Previously, the University had also established a girls’ hostel with a capacity of 500, named after the freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua. During the inauguration, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, highlighted the significance of imparting cultural values to the youth. He stated, “By naming these hostels after Lachit Borphukan and Kanaklata Barua, we aspire to motivate our students with the bravery, patriotism, and leadership demonstrated by these legendary figures.” In conjunction with the hostel, the University also launched the School of Legal Studies, a specialized facility for legal education that adheres to the regulations set forth by the Bar Council of India (BCI). The new building includes well-ventilated and spacious classrooms, a library, and a Moot Court Hall designed to facilitate practical training in advocacy and courtroom procedures. Prof. Singh further remarked, “The creation of a distinct School of Legal Studies represents a significant advancement for our Department of Law, which currently offers LLM and PhD programs.
This dedicated facility is expected to attract more students during the ongoing law admission season.” Dr. Madhumita Acharjee, Head of the Department of Law, announced that with the introduction of the new facility, the Department will commence an integrated BA LLB (Hons) program starting from the next academic year.
