The Assamese language has been designated as the mandatory official language for all government notifications in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that Assamese will become the mandatory official language for all government communications, including notifications, orders, and legislative acts throughout the state. This decision, effective from the upcoming Bohag, emphasizes the use of Assamese as the primary language for official matters, while also recognizing the linguistic diversity within the state.

In the Barak Valley districts, Bengali will be utilized alongside English for official purposes, whereas in the Bodoland Territorial Region, Bodo will serve a similar role. The governor’s notification outlines several key points, including the requirement for all government documents to be translated into Assamese, with Bodo and Bengali translations where applicable, within 30 days of receipt.

Additionally, legacy documents will undergo a phased translation into Assamese over the next two years. The translation efforts will be supported by language departments from local universities, ensuring accuracy and cultural relevance. In cases of ambiguity or legal interpretation, the English versions of laws and regulations will take precedence, thereby maintaining clarity and consistency in governance.
