GUWAHATI: In a notable advancement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday, June 5, the initiation of a sophisticated artificial intelligence-based system designed to identify and prevent deforestation throughout the state. Sharing a video on the social media platform X, the chief minister stated that the system would deliver real-time notifications to authorities whenever illegal deforestation activities are identified.
“Assam now possesses an AI-based system that will promptly alert us when any attempts at deforestation occur,” Sarma posted. “This will empower us to effectively halt deforestation and preserve our green cover.” In a discussion with reporters, Sarma provided further details on the system’s functionality. He mentioned that a new portal, utilizing AI and satellite technology, has been established to oversee forest regions and wildlife. The chief minister pointed out that previously, forest officials were often notified only after significant damage had already taken place. The new system will facilitate immediate alerts, allowing for a quicker response from enforcement teams.
With this initiative, Assam seeks to enhance its forest protection measures and more effectively combat illegal logging than ever before. Additionally, in celebration of World Environment Day 2025, amidst the challenges presented by recent floods and adverse weather conditions, the West Karbi Anglong district initiated a substantial tree plantation campaign under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
