The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced the allocation of funds for Bihu committees

The Assam government has sanctioned a financial package of Rs 1.5 lakh for each of the 3,000 Bihu committees throughout the state as part of its annual support initiative.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this decision on Monday during a press briefing in New Delhi, stating that the funds, approved by the Finance Department, are expected to be distributed within two to three days. He emphasized that this financial aid aims to bolster the cultural celebrations associated with Bihu, a significant festival in Assam.

However, due to the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections, the Chief Minister clarified that no new funding applications will be accepted this year. Only the committees that have previously received assistance will qualify for this support.

This measure reflects the government’s dedication to promoting traditional festivities while complying with electoral guidelines, ensuring that the financial aid will facilitate the organization of various Bihu events that are integral to Assam’s cultural identity.
