SILCHAR: A meeting with stakeholders took place in the New Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office in Cachar, Silchar, presided over by the esteemed Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam. The agenda focused on the planned closure of the Gammon Bridge over the Barak River at Badarpurghat, set to commence on May 21, 2025, for repair work by NHIDCL, lasting two months.
The Chief Secretary urged all relevant stakeholders to provide their insights and gathered updates from various authorities regarding existing issues and challenges. District Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from all three districts in the Barak Valley attended the meeting and contributed their valuable perspectives. Concurrently, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited Silchar to assess alternative routes for rerouting heavy traffic from NH6, necessitated by the deteriorating condition of the Gammon Bridge at Badarpur Ghat, which serves as a crucial link for Barak Valley, Mizoram, and Tripura. With the closure of NH6 essential for urgent bridge repairs, CM Sarma evaluated the Kalain-Silchar State Highway and the sinking zone under PWD improvements, accompanied by the Member (Technical) of NHAI, the Director (Projects) of NHIDCL, the Commissioner & Secretary of PWD, DC Cachar, and others. The viability of utilizing NH27 via Haflong was also assessed to ensure the continuous flow of essential goods.
