The persistent issue of waterlogging in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh has experienced significant flooding in its streets due to heavy rainfall that commenced overnight. Areas particularly impacted include Mancotta Road, VKV Road, Jail Road, Ganga Para, and PN Road. The downpour began on Wednesday night, leading to waterlogged conditions by Thursday morning, with Mancotta Road suffering extensive damage from flash floods in multiple sections. A 300-meter stretch near the newly-built flyover on the Chowkidinghee side was transformed into a stream, with water levels reaching knee height.

A local resident criticized the drainage system, stating it is severely compromised by garbage accumulation, which hinders the drainage of excess water. Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Mayor Saikat Patra, along with Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukon and Executive Officer Navas Das, conducted inspections of the affected areas. Mayor Patra assured that immediate actions are being taken to resolve the waterlogging issue, with emergency teams deployed to clear blocked drains and pump out water from the most severely affected locations.

He emphasized that both short-term and long-term strategies are being developed to mitigate future waterlogging. Another resident, Mantu Sharma, expressed concerns about the poor construction of some drains, questioning their effectiveness in the face of unseasonal rains, particularly with the upcoming monsoon months of June and July.
