NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, as well as Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla, to assess the flood situation in the northeastern states and offered comprehensive assistance in addressing the flood crisis. The northeastern states, including Assam, Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, have recently experienced severe rainfall, resulting in significant disruptions to daily life and severing vital supply chains to remote areas within these states.
PM Modi assured the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, along with the Governor of Manipur, of the Centre’s full support in the ongoing relief and rehabilitation initiatives. The relentless rains in the northeastern states, particularly Assam, Sikkim, and Manipur, as well as neighboring regions, have caused river water levels to rise dangerously high. Key rivers in the area, such as the Brahmaputra, Pachnoi, and Kushiyara, are reported to be flowing at critical levels. Millions of hectares of land have been submerged, trapping residents in their homes and compelling those in low-lying areas to relocate to safer zones.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to X to share that PM Modi contacted him to inquire about the flood situation in the state. “I updated the Prime Minister on how the continuous rainfall in Assam and surrounding states has resulted in flooding and affected numerous lives. I also informed him about the relief operations being conducted by the state government,” he stated on X. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in a message on X, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his support concerning the landslide and flood situation in the state. He reiterated that the state administration is fully dedicated to managing the crisis and providing all necessary assistance to those impacted. “The Prime Minister conveyed his concern and assured complete support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. We are thankful for his guidance and steadfast support to the people of Assam,” he added.
