TEZPUR: The Tezpur City Chapter of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) held a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled “Obstetric Emergencies – Simulation Based Learning” on August 9 and 10 in Tezpur. The purpose of the event was to improve knowledge, skills, and readiness in handling critical obstetric emergencies, particularly through simulation-based training. This was especially pertinent for updating obstetricians and anaesthesiologists, given the concerning maternal mortality rate in Assam, which has been a significant issue for public health professionals and workers. The programme commenced with an inauguration on the evening of the 9th, attended by Dr. Deepankar Sarma, the ISA Assam State president.
Dr. Archana Deka, president of the ISA Tezpur branch, delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for two days filled with valuable learning and professional interaction. The inaugural session featured two lectures from esteemed obstetric anaesthesiologists Dr. Manokanth Madapu and Dr. GL Ravindra, who are based in Hyderabad and Bangalore, respectively. Dr. Manokanth’s presentation on “Safe transfer of the seriously ill pregnant lady” and Dr. Ravindra’s discussion on “Managing a Blood Bank in Co-operative model” sparked considerable enthusiasm among the more than one hundred delegates and doctors present at the event.
Other contributors to the two-day programme included Prof. Karuna Kumar Das, HOD of the Department of Anaesthesiology at Assam Medical College (Dibrugarh), and Prof. Chandita Konwar, HOD, who participated online, providing valuable insights on the topic. Over 100 delegates from various regions of Assam and beyond actively engaged in the CME, creating a highly interactive and collaborative environment. The sessions emphasized the necessity of preventing maternal mortality, highlighting timely intervention and multidisciplinary teamwork as essential strategies.
